lr-fbneo is the prefered Pi 3/Pi 2 Neo Geo emulator due to its accuracy.

lr-fbalpha2012 is useful for any games that may be running slow in the latest version of lr-fbneo for a Pi 3/Pi 2, and if used exclusively instead of lr-fbneo will allow you to do full system updates without worrying about needing to update your ROM Set, but comes at the cost of inaccuracy such as games having audio issues across the entire library and other issues that have been fixed in the latest version of lr-fbalpha.

PiFBA is recommended for those on a Pi 0 or Pi 1.

ROMS

Accepted File Extensions: .7z .zip

Place Neo Geo ROMs in:

BIOS

Neo Geo ROMs require a neogeo.zip BIOS file with the exact same MAME or FB Neo version as the emulator you select. Place the correct neogeo.zip with your ROMs in:

Instructions on how to install the Neo Geo Unibios on lr-neo can be found here: lr-fbalpha Neo Geo Bios. The Unibios can be used as documented on the official page at http://unibios.free.fr/howitworks.html.

  • On the Unibios boot screen
    • Neo Geo A+B+C (RetroPad B+A+Y) for BIOS Menu
    • Neo Geo B+C+D (RetroPad A+Y+X) for Test Menu
  • At any time
    • Neo Geo Start+A+B+C (RetroPad Start+B+A+Y) for In-Game Menu

The menus allow you to change various settings like region, dip switch settings for gameplay options like difficulty or blood, and coin or free play settings. Unibios settings will persist after quitting FBA, launching another Neo Geo game, or rebooting RetroPie.

Controls

You will configure controls differently depending on which emulator you use:

lr-fbneo and lr-fbalpha2012

lr-fbneo and lr-fbalpha2012 utilise RetroArch configs. Add custom RetroArch controls to the retroarch.cfg file in:

For more information on custom RetroArch controls see: RetroArch Configuration

PiFBA

PiFBA controls are located in:

As there is no menu to configure controllers with PiFBA, like there is with Mame4all, you'll have to edit the aforementioned file manually.

GnGeo-Pi Compatibility List feel free to contribute to the list.

As a caveat, if you're using _gngeo-pi__, the ROMs you have must match the file in gngeo_data.zip located at:

You can only play roms that have the same name as these .drv files, e.g. mslug2.zip (rom) and mslug2.drv (data). If the names of these files don't match, GnGeo-Pi will crash. (see the list at the bottom of this page for compatible ROMs)

During playback on the NEOGEO X handheld, there is sound but no image on the screen.
Did you turn off the NEOGEO X from the Station before removing it? Always turn off the NEOGEO X when connecting and disconnecting the Handheld from the Station. Firstly, please press “+” on the Brightness controllers to ensure that the screen is correctly lit. If there is still no image on screen, a soft re-set of the NEOGEO X may be necessary. To do this connect the NEOGEO X to the Station (in the standard way, with both the NEOGEO X and the Station switched off). Then turn on the Station and the NEOGEO X and please leave alone for 20 minutes for the soft re-set cycle to be completed. You will see NEOGEO X is charging when the light appears on the handheld when you open the Station. After 20 minutes your NEOGEO X should be ready to play!

Does the NEOGEO X Gold support original NEOGEO games cartridges?
No, there is no ability to load original AES cartridges on the Neo Geo X Gold System. The NEOGEO X Station can only house the NEOGEO X Handheld inside as a docking station.
No, the twenty games are already pre-loaded onto the NEOGEO X Handheld, but NEOGEO X Game Cards will be available with extra gaming content. More info about this will be announced at a later date.
Does the NEOGEO X use the NEOGEO AES Memory card system?
No, the NEOGEO X does not facilitate the use of the NEOGEO AES save facility. Two games on the NEOGEOX, Magician Lord and Baseball Stars II make reference to the 'Memory Card' but this service is not functional.
You can connect the NEOGEO X to your TV set via HDMI or A/V Out. For the true retro gaming experience we recommend using the AV cable provided.
The NEOGEO X outputs a 480p signal to the TV via HDMI. A HDMI cable is also included.
No, but we have created a 1:1 all new NEOGEO X Arcade Stick. The experience is 100% the same.
Yes it is. Additional NEOGEO X Arcade Sticks will be sold separately.
How large is the screen on the NEOGEO X Handheld Console?
How long do the batteries last on the NEOGEO X Handheld?
English.
Yes is does, but the main method of game storage are the NEOGEO X Game Cards
A fully charged battery should last for approximately 3-4 hrs continuous gameplay.
The NEOGEO X must not be charged using a stand alone power supply or USB cable. ALWAYS connect the NEOGEO X to the Docking Station to charge it.
Can I use the NEOGEO X on Aeroplanes or in Hospitals?
Yes, within the set guidelines of the relevant Airline or Hospital.
Do I need a special set of headphones or can I use my own?
You can use your own headphones - any pair of headphones with a 3.5mm jack will work.
How does the NEOGEO X Handheld dock with the NEOGEO X Station?
The NEOGEO X physically slots inside the NEOGEO X Docking Station.

What type of memory does the NEOGEO X handheld expandable game card slot take?
It uses specially formatted NEOGEO X Game Cards. Please check this website for the latest game information.
What is the plan on allowing customers to play additional NEOGEO games beyond the 20 included?
Please check this website for the latest information. The plan is to release other games that will be exclusive to the NEOGEO X format.
No, it connects into the NEOGEO X Docking Station with a cable, just like the original
Since the NEOGEO X Docking Station is able to connect to an HDTV, will there be any way to change the display settings on how the game looks on the TV? (such as aspect ratio and HD resolution?)
On the NEOGEO X Handheld, you can change the aspect ratio of the screen between 16:9 and 4:3. The games are in their original format and resolution, not High Definition. On HDMI-compatible TV's, the TV's themselves will usually have the option to switch between 16:9 mode and 4:3 mode.
How do I charge my NEOGEO X without using the docking system (for example while I am travelling)?
We suggest you charge the NEOGEO X using a USB cable via a power supply, directly from a power outlet. The output of the Power Supply should be 1.5A only. Use of any other power supply output will void the warranty.
Can I use my laptop (or other electronic device) to charge my NeoGeo X?
NO. Do not charge the NEOGEO X via USB cable using a Laptop or other electronic device. This will void the warranty.
We still suggest the best way to charge the NEOGEO X via docking system. This is the best way to charge the handheld.
Will you be creating a separate power supply unit for the NEOGEO X that I can use when I am travelling?
Yes. We are in the process of arranging this. Please check out the website for the latest update on this.

Why does the NEOGEO X have a limited number of credits/continues

Neo Geo Free Play Setting 4 Slot Machine

The NEOGEO X is a version of the AES (Advanced Entertainment System) by SNK. The AES was the original NEOGEO home system. The games for the NEOGEO AES came with limited credits and continues and therefore, so do the games on the NEOGEO X.
On the original AES System there was a Game Save feature. Why is there not a Game Save feature on the NEOGEO X?
We are currently finalising a Game Save Card for the NEOGEO X. Please watch this website for further announcements.
